PyIMSL Studio™ Is FREE for Non-Commercial Use
Visual Numerics® allows its PyIMSL Studio™ Software Package (PyIMSL Studio) to be used free of charge under the terms of the Visual Numerics PyIMSL Studio License Agreement for Non-Commercial and Commercial Evaluation Users (PyIMSL Studio License).
What does non-commercial use mean?
Non-commercial use means that you, or your organization, are not getting compensated in any form for the products and/or service(s) you develop using PyIMSL Studio.
I am a student. Can I use the non-commercial license with PyIMSL Studio for my homework or projects??
Yes.
I am a professor. Can I use the non-commercial license with PyIMSL Studio as part of the coursework I teach?
Yes. While teaching is a profession for which you are being compensated, Visual Numerics considers this activity to be fundamentally non-commercial. Each of your students will be required to download individual copies of the PyIMSL Studio from the VNI web site and agree to the terms of the PyIMSL Studio license.
I am engaged in academic research. Can I use the non-commercial license with PyIMSL Studio to develop and perform analyses?
If you, as an individual, or your organization as an entity are, or will be, receiving any form of compensation for the research project (i.e., salary, or funding, etc.), you do not qualify for a non-commercial use license. However, you may qualify for the academic license and should contact VNI for more information.
I am engaged in research projects. Can I qualify to use the non-commercial license?
If you, as an individual, or your organization as an entity are, or will be, receiving any form of compensation for the research project (i.e., salary, or funding, etc.) you do not qualify for a non-commercial license. However, if your research is a personal project for which you are not getting compensated in any way, you do qualify for a non-commercial-use license.
My use is non-commercial, but I am part of a project where everyone will need to use PyIMSL Studio. What can I do?
Non-commercial license is an individual-use license, and as such each member of the group project would need to obtain their own copy of the product and license to use it in the project. In addition, to qualify for the non-commercial license the individual in the group project applying for the non-commercial license or the organization cannot receive any form of compensation for working on the group project.
Do the PyIMSL Studio features vary between the non-commercial and commercial licenses?
The IMSL C Numeric libraries may be called from Python or directly from C/C++ when using the commercial offering. Non-commercial users however, have access to the IMSL C Numerical Library only through the Python wrappers. At the current time, this is the only difference in functionality between the commercial and non-commercial offering. However, Visual Numerics reserves the right to change this policy without notice at any time. In addition, the licenses provided include limited support and must be renewed annually.
Once I have developed a Python application using PyIMSL Studio can I share the application with others?
You may share your Python code with anyone. If the Python code developed with PyIMSL Studio uses features from the PyIMSL Software (as defined in the PyIMSL Studio license agreement) then each user needs to obtain their own copy of PyIMSL Studio and license to use.
What can I do if my use is clearly commercial?
You can download PyIMSL Studio for evaluation and see if it meets your needs. If it does meet your needs you will need to contact VNI for a commercial license key. Remember that commercial users get timely email and phone support.
Based on the discussion above, I do not qualify for a non-commercial use license. However, I still feel my situation should qualify for non-commercial use license. What should I do?
Please send us your contact information and why you think your use qualifies in an email to
