Developer Survey Shows Steady Growth in XML File Volume and Size Fueling Demand for Efficient Means of Processing

More than 700 Developers, Architects Share Views on XML Use

BOULDER, CO, June 20, 2008 — Rogue Wave Software, Inc., the leader in enterprise class C++ components and infrastructure, today announced the results of a global survey of software developers designed to determine the ways they are processing XML files, as well as the issues that arise as the typical XML file grows and evolves. The survey revealed that performance and optimization are the main issues enterprises face when processing XML files.

According to the research:

Most companies are experiencing a growth in the use of XML files:

• 51% of the respondents said that nearly a quarter of the files in their organizations called by enterprise files are XML;
• 64% said that their companies are experiencing a 'steady increase' in the overall amount of data stored in XML;

With this growth, the issue of processing XML files has come to the forefront:

• 61% said that the are seeing a steady increase in the size of individual XML files;
• 69% said they are experiencing a steady growth in the number of XML files in the organization;
• The majority of those experiencing a 'significant increase' in the overall number of XML files are also seeing a significant increase in the size and the overall amount of data stored in each XML file;
• More than half of the respondents said that performance and optimization is the main issue they face when working with XML files.

Several of the respondents noted the strategic business benefits when they are able to efficiently process XML files, including:

• "We wouldn't have a business without it-nearly all our third-party feeds are XML."
• "We are able to sustain growth in the amount of information our tools are able to process."
• "We heavily rely on XML files for configuring a complex control system. Transformation allows us to create specific views for the various experts and the use of schemas for validation has proven to drastically decrease errors in the configurations."
• "We have greater visibility into assets and have established a standardized business process for end-of-day activities. We also have greater security, reliability, and efficiency in communication with partners while increasing the scalability of IT managed systems. Finally, XML has enabled easier compliance with regulatory standards."

"As XML files are evolving, they are challenging traditional APIs due to size and number," said Patrick Leonard, Vice President, Engineering and Product Strategy at Rogue Wave. "One of our clients had a 200MB file of XML, which they routinely manipulated by splitting into 5MB fragments - a cumbersome and time consuming exercise.
